Terraced City Garden
A granite home in Aberdeen’s West End was looking for a garden refresh. Working with existing granite terraces and the back garden and a blank slate in front, the design adds character to complement the sleek modern additions the clients have made to the home while honoring local materials and plant palettes. The main feature of the design are dark clay paver ‘welcome mats’ that contrast with the sandstone pavers to indicate thresholds and add unique details to the steps and elevation changes. A custom fountain and hyper-local plant palette complete this angular, yet welcoming garden design.
A true labor of love, this project is being brought to life by the owners who are passionate about building projects. This has meant for a lot of collaboration and the flexibility to make adjustments on site as needed throught a constant dialogue. The site offers space for entertaining, moving with dry feet from garage to home, offering a lawn for dogs to run, all while reserving a significant amount of space for native (largely shade loving) plants. The paving and custom fountain are sleek and angular offering nice contrast to the loose, biodiverse plant palette. The garden is mainly enjoyed from the lower terrace from a wall of windows - the custom fountain cascades down the terraces offering a nice background noise while entertaining and a stunning view year round.
